After Rubens' La Chasse a l'Hippopotame, Engraving by Martini 1772
Experience the uncompromising inspiration of Rubens in your home. I am thrilled to offer this Pietro Martini 1772 engraving of Rubens’ famous painting, La Chasse a l’Hippopotame, which resides in the Alte Pinakothek museum in Munich, Germany.
Pietro Martini was one of the most illustrious French engravers before the Revolution. Undertaking the most challenging call to create engravings of the famous painters, he reproduced an immaculate engraving of this all-consuming painting by Rubens.
Explore the contradictions of exploding violence and energy told within the sensuous curves and lines of his subjects, and the calling of hope in the eyes and movements of both man and beast - all set against a serene background of blue skies, swaying palms, and bountiful grasses.
La Chasse a l’Hippopotame is part of a collection originally commissioned in 1615, by Maximilian I, Elector of Bavaria to decorate Schleißheim Palace, the summer residence of the Wittelsbach princes. The collection includes the sweeping masterpieces of the Hippopotamus and Crocodile Hunt and three others depicting the hunts of Lions, Wolves, and Boars.
Also offered on The Trouver Shop is an equally rare etching of Chasse au Lion, c. late 1700’s by the premier engraving house in France at the time under Jaques Phillip Le Bas.
Both pieces were recently uncovered at a Parisian auction house located in Versailles France. A 10% discount is offered for purchasing the pair of La Chasse a l’Hippopotame and La Chasse au Lion.
